Following the tradition of the Carthusian Cloister in Levoca (founded in 1454), the Jesuit Convict in Levoca (founded in 1724) with their elite school providing higher education to noble families, and the Pedagogical Institute of Spisska Kapitula (founded in 1819) the Faculty of Education of the Catholic University in Ruzomberok was founded in 1995. As the university’s extension, the Institute of Juraj Pales was opened in Levoca in 2008. Juraj Pales was appointed the first director of the Pedagogical Institute in Spisska Kapitula in 1818. In 1819 in Levoca, he published the first book of Pedagogy written in then standard Slovak language – Bernolak’s Slovak.
